I have it in my head that I want to write some kind of epic Modern AU with a lot of political intrigue. I have the notes but who knows if I'll be motivated to write it. I haven't decided if that will be best with the newer trilogy characters or the older trilogy characters yet though.

I also have some of the snippets I wrote on Tumblr that I want to put together into an actual fic, plus an idea that also got kicked around on Tumblr that I have a couple pages written of already. I keep working on them a little bit and them putting them away, coming back to them, putting them away again.
Me, Fandom and Jessica Jones

After watching Jessica Jones I'm kind of glad I stepped away from fandom when I did. Obviously I'm writing about it here, but I've severally limited my fandom presence and I think that's over all a good thing.

Jessica Jones is all about women and characters of color, in a way that is both unapologetic and also in your face. These are real people with real flaws, who struggle in real ways against real odds.

White man appear in this story as villains or bit players and that's pretty much it. They have no power outside of being the villains, their actions don't matter again outside of them being the villains of the story. There is no apology made for this, it isn't softened. Let's be real both Killgrave and Sampson are not just villains they are villains who manipulate and eventually threaten the lives of the women and people of color around them.

I know already that this is going to be hard for fandom. There is a high possibility that Jessica Jones is going to make fans face a lot of stuff about how they think about gender and race. That's possibly going to get pretty ugly. Already I've seen people are saying stuff about Jessica Jones they would never have said about Daredevil. Jessica Jones is a race and gender fail waiting to happen within fandom and people will probably learn from that, but I' don't want to be around when it happens.

comments

It doesn't even have to be them fighting together (although that would be awesome) I just want like Luke and Matt hanging out. Foggy once referred to Luke as the only superhero friend Matt had. Or Jessica Jones working as Matt and Foggy's body guard, which she did in the comics when Nelson & Murdock was being targeted and Daredevil needed to keep a low profile.

These things are now possible on screen and it makes me so happy.

comments

We must dissent from a nation that has buried its head in the sand, waiting in vain for the needs of its poor, its elderly, and its sick to disappear and just blow away. We must dissent from a government that has left its young without jobs, education or hope. We must dissent from the poverty of vision and the absence of moral leadership. We must dissent because America can do better, because America has no choice but to do better." -Thurgood Marshall 1992.

I have no doubt that shortening the Thurgood Marshall quote Matt reads (which a paraphrasing of the above quote) was meant to save time on the show. It’s a long hunk of texted and would have cluttered up the dialog.

On the other hand the writers of the show left out the political and social commentary within Thurgood Marshall’s speech. The urgency to take action against suffering, corruption and apathy is lost in the shortening.

Which is a pity because I think it informs Matt’s character maybe more than the quote use on the show.

Marshall meant this to be a call to action and, given who Matt is, I’m sure he read it as one.

comments

There were some genuinely funny moments. They changed canon in this movie probably more than any other, but realistically they had no other choice. The canon around ant-man had aged badly, to say the very least. In the end I was satisfied with what they did (except for the part about Janet.) The story telling scenes were awesome, I love the way they were done.

All this being said Tor.com asked if Ant-Man was a necessary part of the MCU canon?
a while ago I Googled "slash4femme" right when I came back to fandom after having been gone for 3-4 years. I discovered that while a lot of my fandom stuff and passed into dust. My legacy did live on in the fact that I was cited on the Fanlore Mpreg page, check it: http://fanlore.org/wiki/Mpreg#cite_note-10

Which I think is hilarious and still gives me a chuckle because mpreg is not a kink of mine and I've written maybe two mpreg fics since 2004. But that's how I am remember in the annuls of the internet.

comments
